After helping set up Carbon Co-op, aiming to build a community based scalable retrofit model, we were offered DECC funding to rehearse aspects of the Green Deal with home owners. Working with urbed, the project involved using the Whole House Assessment (see further down the previous page) to assess optimal measures to carry out to the home to reduce bills and emissions by around 80% of the average 1991 levels. We then set out to deliver this, offering interest free loans over 20 years and using 1 contractor for all the homes. Several dropped out but 8 were completed across several different house types. The average cost was just over £40,000 so that with income from PV and the savings on energy use meant that almost all ended up costing less to run post-retrofit. It was an enormously useful learning experience.
